Gmail has been adding AI for 15+ years (Priority Inbox launched in 2010), but 2024–2026 saw the biggest leap since Smart Compose, with full generative AI throughout the product.
1. Priority Inbox. Settings → Inbox → Inbox type → Priority Inbox. Google AI sorts "Important and unread," "Starred," and "Everything else."
2. Summarize a thread. Open any long thread → tap the Summarize button (Gemini sparkle) → get a 2-sentence recap with action items.
3. Help me write. Click Compose → pencil-sparkle icon → type "Reply to Sam confirming our 2 PM call and suggesting we review the Q2 numbers first."
4. Smart Reply. On any email, tap one of the three AI-suggested quick replies ("Thanks!" "Sounds good." "Will do.").
5. Nudge. Gmail automatically surfaces emails you haven't replied to ("Sent 5 days ago. Reply?") and emails you sent that didn't get a reply.

Step 1. Turn on Priority Inbox: Settings → Inbox → Priority Inbox → Save.
Step 2. Enable Smart Compose (if not on): Settings → General → Smart Compose → On.
